A man in his 40s has been beaten with a hammer in his home in south Belfast.

Three men forced their way into the house at Cooke Street, off the lower Ormeau Road, at about 11:40 BST on Saturday.

They attacked him and caused damage to the house before running off. The man was treated in hospital for head injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

Det Insp Mark McHaffie said: "One of the suspects was described as being around 30 years old, of stocky build and was wearing a black woollen hat and grey Nike track top."

Sinn Féin councillor Deirdre Hargey said there was "no justification for this shocking attack".

"Local residents have expressed their anger to me at this attack taking place in their community," she added.
