Work is continuing at a new Tesco store in Armagh, despite the fact the company has said it would not be going ahead with plans to build the supermarket.

On Thursday, the supermarket giant said it had dropped plans for new stores in Armagh and Carryduff in Northern Ireland.

The news came as it announced cutbacks to its supermarket chain across the UK.

However, on Friday the site manager in Armagh said work would continue to make the building secure and watertight.

Tesco has said it will close 43 unprofitable stores across the UK, but has not yet revealed the locations.

The supermarket chain has made the decision as part of a turnaround plan, amid falling sales and profit warnings.
