BBC Northern Ireland presenter Mark Carruthers has announced he is stepping down as chairman of the Lyric Theatre in Belfast.

Mr Carruthers, who presents current affairs programme The View, said it was "time to pass the baton on".

He has been on the theatre's board for almost 14 years, eight as chairman.

The theatre was rebuilt in 2011 on its existing site at Stranmillis on the banks of the River Lagan in an £18m project.

He said: "The Lyric has achieved a great deal in recent years - a new theatre that can stand tall alongside the best in these islands and a renewed commitment to staging quality, innovative and relevant theatre - and I am proud to have played a part in the Lyric team that made that happen."
