Ballygowan bomb alert 'caused by elaborate hoax'

A suspicious object that led to an overnight bomb alert was an elaborate hoax, police have said.

It was discovered shortly after midnight at Meadow Road, Ballygowan in County Down.

Residents had to leave their homes as army bomb officers moved in.

People were able to return to their houses at 06:30 BST on Friday after the area was declared safe. Police have appealed for information.
