A man in his 30s has suffered serious head injuries after he was assaulted by a gang in Londonderry.

Police were called following reports of a fight between a number of men in Newmarket Street after 02:00 BST on Sunday.

The injured man is in a critical condition in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

Newmarket Street was closed after the incident.

The deputy mayor of Derry City and Strabane District council said measures should be examined to solve the problem of late-night city centre violence.

"There is no one simple quick fix to this," said SDLP councillor John Boyle.

"People need to feel safe and if that requires a greater PSNI presence then that is something we will be discussing wit the police."

Another area to explore was staggering pub closing times, he added.

PSNI Superintendent Gordon McCalmont said police will look at city centre safety at the weekends.

"We need to look at what we are doing and see if there is something we are missing. I am not 100% sure more policing is the answer but we will certainly consider it."
