A suspicious object which caused a security alert in Lurgan was a hoax, police have said.

Officers said a "small number" of houses had earlier been evacuated due to the incident in Kilvoragh Park in the County Armagh town.

Following an examination by army bomb disposal experts, the device was declared to be a hoax.

Residents have since returned to their homes and the road has now reopened to traffic.

"It is believed the object may have been thrown at a house in the area during the early hours of this morning," said Ch Insp Tim Flanigan.

"I would wish to thank the local community in Kilvoragh Park for their patience and understanding while police worked to make the area safe particularly on Christmas Eve."

Anyone with any information about incident has been urged to contact police.
