Fears are growing that the Stream call centre in Londonderry is to close.

The call centre provides customer service and technical support for computer hardware products.

At its peak, Stream International was one of the largest employers in the city with a workforce of hundreds, but most of the staff have been paid off.

It is now believed the remaining 30 staff have also received redundancy notices.

Liam Gallagher of Derry Trades Council said the work had dried up.

"This company employed up to a 1,000 people at one time," he said.

"It shows the fickle nature of this particular type of employment which is basically dependent upon servicing companies which are going through and feeling the pinch in terms of the economic downturn."
