Vigilance call follows taxi break-ins in Creggan, Derry

A taxi drivers association in Londonderry has urged drivers to be vigilant to combat thieves breaking into their vehicles.

The police said three taxis were targeted in Creggan at the weekend.

Andrew McCartney from North West Taxi Proprietors said money and radio equipment have been stolen from a number of taxis in the last five weeks.

"It seems to be happening in the early hours of the morning, they break a window and search through the car.

"They're taking money, but they're also vandalising the equipment which is very expensive, and the drivers also have potentially a day off the road while they get the equipment repaired.

"I want to appeal to people out there who see anything to contact the police immediately, and I'm also asking taxi drivers to make sure they secure their vehicles."
