A 33 year old man has been arrested in Londonderry after drugs estimated to be worth £800,000 were seized during a PSNI operation.

A substantial quantity of herbal cannabis was seized after officers from the Oranised Crime Branch stopped a van on the Glengalliagh Road at around 19.00 BST on Monday night.

The drugs were hidden in kitchen units in the vehicle.

The suspect is being questioned at Strabane police station.

Commander of G District, Chief Superintendent Stephen Martin, commended the officers involved in the operation.

" We have seized a substantial quantity of cannabis - drugs which will no longer pose a threat to our community and, in particular, to younger people," he said.

"Police are committed to reducing the harm posed to people by the scourge of drugs.

"We will continue to do this by working with groups and individuals through the criminal justice system to ensure drugs are taken off our streets and those involved in this evil and dangerous trade are brought before the courts."
