Warrant out on fisherman in Pacific

Bishop Street Court House

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Londonderry man who did not attend court because he is on a fishing trawler in the Pacific.

Conal MacGrianna, 23, from Sandringham Park in Prehen, was due in the city's magistrates court on Friday for a preliminary enquiry.

He is charged with possessing cannabis, and possessing with intent to supply, on 15 April 2010.

The district judge said the defendant should have returned for the hearing.

The court was told that Mr MacGrianna was due in court earlier in May on the same charges, but on that occasion his solicitor said he was on a trawler off the coast of Australia and not due to return to port until the week of 11 May.

The hearing was then adjourned to allow the defendant to attend.

But on Friday his solicitor said he had spoken to his client by satellite phone, and he was still fishing in the Pacific Ocean.
