Burglar who threatened family jailed for six years

A 37-year-old man who was caught at the scene of an attempted robbery in Limavady has been jailed for six years at Londondery Crown Court.

Simon Timoney, from Patrick Street in Strabane, had his arm jammed in a door until the police arrived.

Timoney admitted attempted robbery, aggravated burglary and common assault after the incident in October 2010.

He also pleaded guilty to falsely imprisoning the homeowners and their family.

Judge Piers Grant said the daughter was tied up with cable and Timoney's masked accomplice had threatened to break the bones of the four family members, starting with their fingers, unless they gave information about their house safe.

He said the incident had a significant impact on the family.

The court was told the disabled son had given up his place in school and the daughter suffered ongoing psychological problems.

Judge Grant said while Timoney was not the prime mover, he had ample opportunity to stop and leave.
