Londonderry judge sent hate mail over court orders

A district judge in Londonderry has revealed he was sent hate mail for granting anonymity orders in drugs cases.

Judge Barney McElholm banned the publication of names in a number of cases because of threats to defendants from republican vigilantes.

Republican Action Against Drugs (RAAD), a vigilante group in Derry, was responsible for shooting people suspected of involvement in the drugs trade.

On Thursday, Mr McElholm told Londonderry Magistrates' Court that his decision had brought him unwelcome attention on social networking sites.

"I do not go on social media, but I have received hate mail from all sorts of lunatic right wing fanatics in England, who seemed to think that RAAD are a great bunch of guys," he said.
