Ryan McGlinchey jailed for Limavady burglary

Justice

A 30-year-old man who has 143 previous convictions has been jailed for three years at Londonderry Crown Court for breaking into a house with a hammer.

Ryan McGlinchey from Sperrin Road in Limavady, admitted stealing a mobile phone and a set of keys when he burgled a house at Irish Green Street in October 2012.

He left the hammer behind him.

McGlinchey has previous convictions including kidnapping, assaults, thefts and burglaries.

Jailing McGlinchey, judge Phillip Babbington described his record as "appalling" and said he had been convicted of an offence every year since 1998 with the exception of one year.

Judge Babbington said McGlinchey had been assessed as being of a high risk of re-offending and of posing a serious risk of causing harm to members of the public.

McGlinchey was caught by the police half an hour after the burglary took place when the house tenant gave his description to the police.

Judge Babbington said McGlinchey would spend 15 months in custody and 21 months on licence and after his prison release McGlinchey will be put on a curfew and electronically tagged.
