A 41-year-old man has been jailed for eight months at Londonderry Magistrates' Court after he smashed a coffee mug in his nephew's face.

Graham Monaghan, from Clonmeen Drive in Derry, admitted assaulting his nephew during a domestic incident in a house in the Strathfoyle area of the city on 14 March this year.

Monaghan also headbutted his nephew in the face.

The injured party was treated in hospital for facial cuts and bruises.

Jailing Monaghan, Deputy District Judge John Connolly described the incident as "horrific" and said Monaghan "was lucky not to be facing a more serious charge".
