A man and four young children, all aged under 11, have escaped injury after shots were fired at a house in Londonderry.

The attack happened on Racecourse Drive in the city at about 21:40 BST on Monday.

The police are trying to establish a motive for the attack and have appealed for witnesses.

Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney said: "Those behind attacks need to end their war with the community.

There is no place for guns on our streets."

SDLP councillor Brian Tierney said that it was a reckless attack.

"It's through luck rather than design that we aren't dealing with horrifying scenes this morning," he said.
