A murder inquiry has been launched after the death of a 27-year-old man in North Ayrshire.

Scott Margery was found by a passing motorist lying seriously injured on a footpath near Main Street, Stevenston, at about 0355 BST, police said.

Mr Margery, from Ardrossan, was taken to hospital, where he later died.

Strathclyde Police said he was the victim of a "violent attack". Det Insp Craig McArthur appealed for witnesses to come forward.

He said: "Our enquiries are at an early stage and we are currently trying to piece together his movements prior to the incident.

"What we do know is that Mr Margery has been the victim of a violent attack; an attack which has resulted in this young man losing his life. It is vital that we trace the person or people who were responsible."
