A 63-year-old man has been seriously assaulted in an "alarming ordeal" during a break-in at his home in South Lanarkshire, police have said.
The man was in his house in Threestanes Road, Strathaven, with his 59-year-old wife, when he was confronted by a housebreaker at 2110 GMT on Friday.
The victim suffered cuts to his head and hands as he tried to defend himself and his wife.
The suspect made off empty-handed through the back of the house.
He was described as about 5ft 8in, of slim build, and was wearing a dark coloured hat, a dark knee-length coat, and dark trousers.
Police said he concealed his face with a dark scarf and spoke with a local accent.
Det Con Jim Waddell said: "This was a particularly alarming ordeal for this couple to go through in their own home, a place where they should feel safe.
"Although he will be left with scars, the householder will make a full recovery and thankfully he managed to prevent his wife from being injured.
"However, both of them are extremely distressed after what they have been through and it is imperative that we catch the person responsible."
