The leader of the Scottish Conservatives, Ruth Davidson, has announced she is to marry her partner.

Ms Davidson said she had popped the question to her 34-year-old partner Jen Wilson while the pair were away over the weekend.

She said in a Tweet: "So, I've been away for a few days as I had an important question to ask. Delighted Jen said yes. Very happy."

The MSP also posted a picture of an engagement ring.

A Scottish Conservative spokesman said: "Normally we wouldn't comment on personal issues but everybody in the party will want to wish Ruth and Jen the very best."

The engagement follows the Holyrood election in which Ms Davidson led her party to become the second largest in the Scottish Parliament, overtaking Labour with 31 seats.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: "Congratulations to you both."

Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale tweeted: "Massive congratulations to you both from Louise and I."

Chancellor George Osborne also responded on Twitter saying: "Congratulations Ruth. Brilliant news x"
