Two young girls have been indecently assaulted while walking along a street in Dalkeith, Midlothian.

The children aged 11 and 12 were approached by a man on Eskdaill Street shortly before 2000 BST on Monday.

The man had tried to talk them before indecently assaulting them. The girls were not injured but police said they were distressed by the ordeal.

The attacker was described as white, in his 40s, about 5ft 10in tall with fair hair. He also had a graze on his face.

He was wearing a red and black waterproof jacket and dark jogging bottoms.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: "We know that there were a number of people in the area at the time of the assault, and we are appealing for anyone who saw what happened, or who noticed the suspect in the area, to contact police immediately.

"Similarly, anyone who recognises his description, or who has any other information that can help our inquiries, should contact police."
