Man shot outside gym appears in court

A man who was shot outside an Edinburgh health club has appeared in court accused of spitting in a woman's face.

Robert Kelbie, 27, appeared from custody at the city's Sheriff Court, where he faced the assault charge.

He was alleged to have spat in Stephanie Dignan's face on Thursday at Peffermill Road in Edinburgh.

Kelbie, who was shot in the Newcraighall area the previous day, denied the allegation and was released on bail.

He will have to return to the sheriff court in the new year.

Kelbie was treated at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary after he was shot and injured outside Bannatyne's Health Club on Wednesday.

He later discharged himself from hospital.
