Driver dies in crash after breaking down on Fife road

A driver has died in a crash after breaking down on a Fife road.

Gordon Appleford, 54, had just repaired his car and was driving off from the side of the road when he was hit by another vehicle on the B9097.

The incident happened at 1850 BST on Thursday on the Kinglassie to Ballingry Road, known as the Westfield Road.

His silver Rover 214 collided with a green BMW. He was taken to Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline where he later died.

The roadway was closed for several hours to allow for collision investigations to be carried out.

Insp Mark Anderson, of Fife Constabulary, said: "Our thoughts are with Mr Appleford's family at this sad time.

"We are keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the area of the accident at the time the Rover had broken down or at the time the collision occurred.

"We would encourage these people to contact us, so they can help us with our investigations."
