Pedestrian dies in Edinburgh road accident

A 41-year-old pedestrian has died after being knocked down in Edinburgh in the early hours of New Year's Day.

Lothian and Borders Police appealed for witnesses following the accident at 0420 GMT near the Playhouse Theatre in Union Place.

Officers said a black Toyota struck the man and continued on its journey before returning to the scene.

The pedestrian was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and died a short time later.

A police spokesman said: "We are appealing for anyone who was in the area and witnessed the collision to contact police immediately.

"Anyone else who has any information that can assist our enquiries should also get in touch."
