An investigation has been launched after a seven-year-old girl was left behind during a school outing to an Edinburgh swimming pool.

Katie McLintock was left at Gracemount Leisure Centre after her school teacher miscounted her class.

The Castleview Primary pupil left the changing rooms after drying her wet hair to find her class had gone.

An Edinburgh City Council spokesman apologised and said it was "completely unacceptable".

The youngster said she managed to find her swimming teacher who alerted the school and sent someone to collect her.

An Edinburgh City Council spokesman said: "We are really sorry that this incident happened and have apologised to Katie and her mother for the distress caused.

"This was completely unacceptable and therefore we have embarked on a full investigation of the circumstances.

"We would, however, like to reassure parents that during this incident Katie remained under the care of council staff at Gracemount Leisure Centre."
