Probe after flares set off during Hibernian-Hearts game

Football fans who set off flares at the Edinburgh derby match between Hibernian and Hearts earlier this week have been condemned by police.

The Lothian and Borders force has appealed for witnesses after two smoke canisters were discharged during the game at Easter Road on Monday.

The flares were let off after the first and second Hearts' goals.

A police spokesman said: "This mindless act of stupidity could have put the rest of the crowd at significant risk."

Officers are carrying out inquiries to identify those responsible and have urged anyone with any information to contact them.

The spokesman added: "We will be working closely with both clubs and security personnel to ensure incidents like this do not happen again."
