An armed thief who held up a newsagent in West Lothian with a knife is being sought by police.

The incident happened at 21:35 on Sunday at a branch of RS McColls in West Main Street, Armadale.

The man threatened two female staff, forcing them to empty the safe before escaping with a four-figure sum.

The robber was white, in his 30s, 5ft 8in to 6ft tall, and of medium build. He wore a black jumper, black tracksuit top and black trousers.

His face was covered with a blue woollen hat and striped scarf and he spoke with a local accent.

After the robbery the man ran towards West Main Street and down a lane leading to Hailstones Crescent.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said the two women were not injured, but had been left shaken by their ordeal.

He added that the force wanted to hear from anyone who saw the suspect entering or leaving the premises, or noticed anyone acting suspiciously in the area.

"Similarly, anyone who recognises the description of the suspect, or who has any other information that can assist out inquiries, should also get in touch," added the spokesman.
