A woman was left "extremely distressed" after a man grabbed her around the neck in an Edinburgh hotel car park as she walked home from a night out.

The attacker crept up behind the woman at the Premier Inn hotel on Morrison Circus at about 01:00.

Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident.

The 21-year-old woman had left the Chanter bar in Bread Street and was walking home when she was attacked.

Police said the motive for the attack was "unclear".

"Although she was not injured, the victim was left extremely distressed and we are engaging closely with the local community to identify the man responsible," said a spokesman.

"Anyone with information relating to this incident is asked to contact police immediately."

The attacker was described as being white, 25 to 30 years old and 5ft 7in tall, with shoulder-length dirty blond hair. He was wearing a light coloured shirt and dark trousers.
