A kitesurfer has been airlifted to hospital after being dragged along a Fife beach by his kite.

The 30-year-old man suffered spinal injuries in the incident on Pettycur Bay near Kinghorn at about 10:30.

He was flown to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where his condition is unknown.

Pettycur Bay is one of the most popular areas for kitesurfing in Scotland, along with Troon in Ayrshire and beaches in the north east.

A spokesman for Forth Coastguard said the incident took place in windy conditions.

"With the kitesurfers, some of them have their feet attached to the board so a change in the wind can lift them into the air and pull them in the wrong direction," he added.
