Michael McGown jailed for child rape and abuse

A man who raped a primary schoolgirl and abused four young girls has been jailed for 10 and a half years.

Michael McGown, 39, was found guilty of one charge of rape and four charges of sexually abusing young girls.

He committed the offences at various addresses in Edinburgh between 2002 and 2012.

Judge O'Grady also ordered him to be monitored in the community for four years after his release from prison.

A jury at the High Court in Glasgow heard that McGown sexually abused and raped his young victim when she was aged between seven and 11.

He also sexually abused four other primary school girls. The youngest was just four when he began abusing her.

Sentencing McGown, Judge O'Grady told him: "You have been convicted of an appalling catalogue of offences.

"For almost a decade you horribly exploited children. It is clear one girl was raped by you regularly. Another girl was four when you started abusing her.

"You have blighted their childhoods and the damage you have done will haunt their adult lives. You will continue to to pose a real risk to children for years to come."
