Police are appealing for witnesses after a gang broke a man's jaw and cheekbone while he was out walking his dog with his wife in Edinburgh.

The attack happened in Sleigh Drive at about 02:55 on New Year's Day.

The 35-year-old man and his 42-year-old wife were near the roundabout at the junction with Restalrig Road South when he was attacked.

Det Con John McShane, of Police Scotland, said: "This appears to be a random and unprovoked attack".

He said it had left the victim with painful injuries to his face.

Det Con McShane asked anyone who saw anything suspicious in Sleigh Drive that morning to contact police.

"We believe there were a number of other pedestrians and motorists in the area at the time of the assault and are keen to trace these individuals as soon as possible," he said.

"In addition, anyone who can help us identify and trace the suspects is asked to get in touch."
