The family of a student who died after falling out of an Edinburgh window has paid tribute to him, describing him as smart, funny and witty.

Ben McLean, 19, from Barrhead in East Renfrewshire, was found dead in West Preston Street at 09:00 on Friday.

He was a medical student at Edinburgh University.

Inquiries into the full circumstances of the incident are ongoing and a 19-year-old man has been charged in connection with drugs supply.

Hard working

Mr McLean's family said: "There are no words to explain how devastated we all are that this has happened.

"Ben was the smartest, funniest and most witty boy in all of our lives. Not only had he just passed his second year medicine exams but he was also the life and soul of every party.

"Ben strived to please others and knew the perfect balance between working hard and having fun."

The statement added: "It goes without saying that Ben was taken far too young but he was endlessly remarkable, and it is reassuring to know a boy like that could never be forgotten.

"We would like to thank everyone for their kind words and thoughts."
