A 40-year old man has appeared in court after a suspicious package was reported at an address in Edinburgh.

Kevin Tod made a brief appearance in private at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on a charge of breach of the peace.

He made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody.

His appearance in court followed an incident in the Niddrie area on Monday afternoon when a report was received alleging a person was in possession of an explosive device.

Bomb disposal experts from the Army went to a house in Niddrie Park Square after the emergency services were alerted at about 16:30 on Monday.

Surrounding homes were evacuated as a precaution while the engineers assessed the package.

They established it was not a viable device and that it posed no threat to the public.
