Man jailed for raping young girls

A former businessman has been jailed for five-and-a-half-years for raping two young girls more than 40 years ago in North Lanarkshire.

Robert Murphy from Tibbermore, Perth, was found guilty of abusing the girls in Airdrie between 1967 and 1975.

The High Court in Glasgow heard how he was 15-years-old when he attacked his first victim, a 10-years-old girl.

Judge Lord Bannatyne also placed 57-year-old Murphy on the sex offenders' register for life.

Before passing sentence, the judge said: "You have lived a useful life. However, rape is by its nature a serious matter and there can only be one possible sentence.

"Moreover, these offences have had a material and long term effect on the lives of the complainers. That was quite apparent."
