Detectives have launched a murder inquiry after a 55-year-old man was killed in a "brutal attack" at a flat in Greenock.

Brian Docherty's body was found in his flat in Clynder Road, Greenock, at about 2020 BST on Tuesday.

Strathclyde Police said that following a post-mortem examination the discovery was being treated as murder.

Officers asked anyone with information about Mr Docherty's death to contact them.

Det Insp Ross Mackay said: "Our inquiries are progressing, albeit the investigation is still at an early stage, and police are currently carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the area.

"I would urge anyone who was in the area of Clynder Road on the evening of Monday 16 August 2010, who may have witnessed anything of a suspicious nature to come forward to police."
