A man who grabbed a three-year-old girl by the hair and repeatedly battered her face in a supermarket car park has been jailed for 136 days.

William Totten, 27, admitted attacking the child, who cannot be named for legal reasons, outside Asda in Parkhead, Glasgow, in August this year.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard how Totten shouted "shut up" and "give me peace" to the girl before assaulting her.

The incident was witnessed by two CCTV operators who reported it to police.

'Serious offence'

The court was told that Totten grabbed the youngster's doll from her and began bashing it against a shopping trolley before turning his rage on the girl.

He jerked her head back by pulling her hair before repeatedly hitting her in the face as the child screamed in terror.

Jailing him, Sheriff Alan Mackenzie told Totten: "I have given your case careful consideration and I consider it to be a very serious offence.

"As I reflect upon the nature of the charge committed against a three-year-old, no disposal other than custody is appropriate."
