Police have stepped up patrols in the west end of Glasgow after a woman was raped while returning from a night out.

The woman was approached by a man who tried to start a conversation with her in Wilton Drive, North Kelvinside, at about 0030 GMT on Monday.

She walked off, without speaking, into nearby Wilton Crescent Lane, where the man followed and raped her.

The suspect is described as being of black, African/Caribbean appearance and about 5ft 4in tall.

Following the attack, the woman managed to make her way to a friend's house where she contacted police.

'Terrifying attack'

The woman did not require medical attention but was left deeply traumatised by the attack.

Det Sgt John Semple, from Strathclyde Police, said: "She had been out for the night and was walking home when this man tried to chat to her. She did not want to talk to him so tried to get away, however, he came after her and then attacked her.

"This was a terrifying attack and it is imperative that we catch the man responsible.

"Police patrols have been stepped up in the local area to reassure local residents. If anyone has any concerns over their safety than we would ask them to speak to our officers or contact their local police office."

Det Sgt Semple said officers were checking CCTV images from the area and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
