Woman raped by 'befriended man' in Govan

A woman has been raped by a man she befriended in Glasgow city centre during the early hours.

Strathclyde Police are investigating the attack near Riverview Gardens in Govan at about 0230 BST.

The 39-year-old woman met the man near Waterloo Street, Glasgow, and walked with him from the city centre, via the Squinty Bridge and the Clyde Walkway.

The man then grabbed the woman, pulled her into bushes and raped her. He then ran off towards the city centre.

Police said the woman, who was "extremely distressed, but not physically injured", told a driver of a nearby vehicle what had happened and he called police.

Det Sgt Frank Clarke, from Govan CID, has appealed for information from anyone who saw the man and woman walking across the bridge or on the Clyde Walkway.

The man is described as white and he was wearing dark clothing.
