Officials have seized cocaine worth up to £5m from a ship which came to Scotland from Colombia.

The UK Border Agency said 10kg worth of the drug was found during the unloading of the foreign-registered MV Bulk Australia at Hunterston Quay, Ayrshire.

Specialist search teams and divers are continuing their investigations.

The agency said that no one had been arrested in connection with the find, which is one of the largest drug seizures in Scotland.

The vessel, which had left the port of Puerto Prodeco in Colombia, was carrying a haul of coal.

Murdo MacMillan, from the UK Border Agency in Scotland, said his organisation was at the forefront of the fight to stop illegal drugs.

He added: "We are determined to protect society from this activity which can have such a destructive impact on local communities as well as individuals."
