'Despicable' attack on woman, 82

An 82-year-old woman is in hospital with serious injuries after a "despicable attack" by a man who tried to rob her near a school.

The woman was climbing outside stairs leading to Knightswood Secondary School in Glasgow when a man tried to pull her bag from her shoulder from behind her.

She screamed for help and during the struggle fell backwards against railings.

A man passing-by intervened and pulled the attacker from her.

Stable condition

The woman, who had been on her way to a keep-fit class at the school, went home and contacted police.

She was then taken to the Western Infirmary where she was treated for injuries to her ribs and is said to be in a stable condition.

Strathclyde Police appealed for information about the incident which happened at about 09:50 on Friday.

Det Insp Filippo Capaldi said: "This is a shocking and despicable attack on an elderly lady and I appeal to anyone who recognises the description of the suspect to contact police as soon as possible.

"I also would like to speak to the man who intervened and assisted the elderly woman and urge him to contact police immediately."

The suspect is described as a white man, 17 to 24 years old, 5ft 7in and of very thin build.

He was wearing a black and white furry hat which was recovered at the scene, a scarf which covered the lower part of his face, a black padded jacket and dark green khaki trousers.
