Five men appear in court charged over Glasgow 'riot'

Five men have appeared in court over a large-scale disturbance in Glasgow city centre last Friday which police suspect was organised on social media.

Lewis Holton, 27, Jack Fraser, 19, Gary Haldane, 21, Fahad Saidd, 20, and 19-year-old Edward Percy are charged with breaching the peace in Queen Street.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court, they each made no plea or declaration and were released on bail except Saidd, from Glasgow, who was remanded in custody.

The incident happened on 21 September.

It was reported after the disturbance that footage, filmed by residents living in flats above Queen Street, showed police officers being forced to retreat from a threatening mob.

The crowd are seen stopping the traffic during the mass disturbance at about 04:00 before about a dozen police vehicles arrived.

Police suspect that the incident was organised using social media such as Facebook and Twitter.
