Two hurt escaping 'deliberate' blaze in Dalry

A man and a woman were injured as they escaped from a blaze which police said was started deliberately at their upstairs flat in Ayrshire.

The pair, aged 39 and 48, were forced to jump from a window after failing to put out the fire in Lynn Avenue, Dalry.

The man is being treated in Glasgow Royal Infirmary for smoke inhalation and superficial burns.

The woman was taken to Crosshouse Hospital with minor injuries to her arms caused by jumping from the window.

Fire crews attended the scene and extinguished the fire before it spread to other flats.

Police are treating the incident, which occurred at 23:30 on Friday, as attempted murder.

Det Insp Scott McClelland said: "This would appear to have been a targeted attack on the people in the flat, however, at this time, the motive is not known.

"The consequences for them, and indeed the others in the block of flats, could have been much worse had the fire taken hold."
