Former Rangers owner Craig Whyte is facing moves to have him disqualified from being a company director.

It is understood that the action has been brought by the Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills.

The move under Company Directors Disqualification legislation could, if successful, result in him being banned for between two and 15 years.

Mr Whyte, 43, is understood to be contesting the move. A hearing at the Court of Session is expected next week.

The Scottish businessman has previously been given a seven-year ban from holding a directorship.

He took over the Ibrox club in 2011 when he bought the controlling interest from majority shareholder Sir David Murray for £1.

The club entered administration in February the following year over unpaid tax to HM Revenue and Customs.
