A man has died after falling overboard from a Harris to Skye ferry.

Fellow passengers raised the alarm after they saw the man plunge into the sea at about 1750 BST.

The CalMac ferry, which was travelling from Tarbert to Uig, launched its own fast rescue craft which plucked the man from Loch Snizort, near Uig pier. He had been in the water about 15 minutes.

Police later named the man as Jozef Foliant, 49, who was from Holland but living in Aberdeen.

Stornoway Coastguard sent a helicopter and a paramedic was winched on board but the Mr Foliant died.

It is not known how the man came to fall into the water.

A Northern Constabulary spokesman said: "Police are currently carrying out inquiries to establish the full circumstances and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."

A CalMac spokesman said: "We can confirm that there was an incident but it is a matter for the police."
