Two police officers who disarmed a man after he threatened to shoot them have been honoured by Northern Constabulary.

Pcs Michael Gallie, 30, and Blair McMaster, 34, tackled John Christie, 24, after he was seen in Castlebay on Barra with an air gun.

They have received force commendations for professionalism and bravery following their actions last December.

Christie, of Castlebay, was later convicted of eight offences and jailed for two years.

Members of the community of Barra requested that the two officers be recognised for their bravery.

Chief Constable Ian Latimer congratulated the constables.

He said: "Good work is done by many officers and staff across the force on a daily basis, however chief constable commendations are infrequently awarded.

"Constable Blair McMaster and Constable Mike Gallie are deserving of this special recognition for their professionalism and bravery shown in successfully resolving the incident."
