Helpline offer amid probe into sexual assaults at Fort William nursery

Concerned parents have been urged to contact a helpline as police investigate allegations that children attending a nursery in Fort William were sexually assaulted.

Mark MacLennan appeared at the town's sheriff court on Tuesday under the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2009.

The 28-year-old, from Stirling, made no plea or declaration and the case was continued for further examination.

Police Scotland has not named the nursery.

Det Ch Insp Pamela Ross said it was understandable that families may have worries about the investigation.

She said: "We have identified all the parents of children connected to this nursery and either have been or will be in touch with them.

"We have also established a number of support mechanisms together with partners, and one of these is a helpline which is run by Children 1st.

"Call takers at Parentline Scotland are trained to provide advice and guidance and can refer callers or any relevant information on to police or the appropriate agency to provide further support locally."

The Parentline number can be contacted on 0800 028 2233.
