Pairc Estate buyout: Residents vote for land purchase
- Published
People living on the Pairc Estate in Lewis have voted to proceed with the purchase of the privately owned estate.
Residents launched Scotland's first hostile buyout three years ago, before an agreement was reached with landowner Barry Lomas late in 2013.
On Thursday night, 166 voted for the buyout, with 77 against, giving a turnout of eligible voters of 62.7%.
Pairc Estate Trust said the community would start running the estate once legal documents were signed.
It will cost the trust £500,000 to purchase the 26,775 acres (10,835ha).
Money has been offered from the Scottish Land Fund, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Western Isles local authority, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.
