Driving ban for Lewis woman who caused death in crash

A woman who admitted causing another woman's death in a crash has been banned from driving for four years.

Caroline Mackay, of Newmarket, Lewis, pleaded guilty to driving at excessive speed and losing control of her car near Stornoway on 20 August 2012.

Karin Prior, 51, a passenger in the car that was hit by Mackay's vehicle, died at Western Isles Hospital.

Ms Prior, a Children's occupational therapist, was living in Lewis but was originally from Ontario in Canada.

Mackay was also given a two-year community payback order which included 250 hours of unpaid community service work.

Sentencing her at Stornoway Sheriff Court, Sheriff David Sutherland said: "This is a tragic case with the consequences devastating for many people."

He added: "This is an extremely serious offence with dreadful consequences."
