Woman believed dead after country house fire in Sutherland

An elderly woman is believed to have died in a fire in a large country house in Sutherland.

Firefighters were called out to the blaze at Invernauld House near Rosehall at about 21:30 on Saturday.

At the height of the fire 19 crew and four appliances were involved in the operation.

The fire service said one person remained unaccounted for following the blaze. She is understood to be Lady Jean Gilmour, who is in her 90s.

He family has been informed.

A second woman, aged 62, received medical treatment for burns to her face and hands.

An investigation into the cause of the fire was due to get under way.

Lady Jean's husband Col Sir Allan Gilmour was a decorated soldier. He died in 2003 aged 86.

Sir Allan, who was born at Rosehall, was awarded the MC and Bar while serving with the Seaforth Highlanders in north Africa during World War Two.
