Fire breaks out at Stornoway sawmill

A fire has destroyed a store and machinery at a sawmill near Lews Castle College in Stornoway on Lewis.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) was alerted to the blaze at 05:00.

More than 20 firefighters from Stornoway and Shawbost brought the incident at the Stornoway Trust-owned mill under control by 08:30.

No-one was injured and the fire service has started an investigation into the cause.

The sawmill can continue to operate using equipment not damaged by the fire.

Steve Oliver, of SFRS, said: "The fire was very close to administrative offices and other workshops and crews worked very hard to preserve as much of the building as they could.

"The roof is in an unsafe state and will require to be made safe before investigations can commence."
