A man who admitted threatening to kill two police officers with a nail-gun during a 13-hour stand-off has avoided jail.

Builder Laurence Leonard, 50, was involved in the incident at a construction yard in Orkney last month.

Relatives contacted police after finding a letter containing a reference to "going out in a blaze of glory".

He was sentenced to 18 months' probation and 160 hours of community service at Kirkwall Sheriff Court.

Firearms officers and negotiators had been brought in before he gave himself up.

It later emerged that there was no nail-gun within the office.
