The creation of an Aberdeen aquatics centre has taken a step forward after plans for the building were given the go-ahead by the city council.

The joint venture, between the University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen City Council and sportscotland, would include a 50m pool.

Diving facilities and spectator seating for 600 would also be included.

A final decision will be made by the project board in June next year on receipt of tenders.

If construction work began in late 2011 the centre could open to the public in 2014.
